Activists of organization Ekotim, in cooperation with "UN Volunteers" on Saturday, 05.decembra 2009, marked the International Day Volunteers. On this occasion, activists was share to the citizens information leaflets about the problem of waste in landfills Krupac, and linen bags to use less plastic shopping bag, a present had the opportunity to sign a petition to resolve the problems of waste in the landfill Krupac and petition the world leaders who will be found on the World Summit in Copenhagen to sign a contract that would reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, as a condition for stopping climate change.
Activists of organization Ekotim in cooperation with "UN Volunteers" organized on 05th December 2009.god. in front of BBI Center in Sarajevo, the action of distribution of informative material about the problem that the landfill waste in Krupac. On this occasion citizens were divided into 500 cloth bags to reduce plastic bag use, and thus reduce the amount of waste generated their use.
In addition to the division of material, the citizens had the opportunity to sign two petitions.
The first petition was a local character and refers to the request to the competent institutions to resolve the problem of waste in landfills Krupac, a second petition is intended for world leaders who will meet on Monday in the Copenhagen summit on climate change.
Petition for the removal of landfill waste "Krupac" will be used to request the competent handling of this problem. Due to the lack of agreement between the competent institutions and lack of implementation of national strategy for solid waste management in BiH, waste from East Sarajevo is going into landfill which is located in a former quarry in the Krupac in the canyon of the river "Željeznica". Leachate from the landfill, which are highly toxic, and according to our research of water samples containing increasing amounts of heavy metals, are due in the river "Željeznica". There is justified fear that these heavy metals and poisons similar to that leached from the landfill could reach the groundwater and thereby pollute the underground water reserves, where the drinking water resource for Canton Sarajevo and East Sarajevo. The petition will be sent to inter-entity body for environmental protection, Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Ministry of Planning, Environmental and Construction of the RS.

Another petition which the citizens had the opportunity to sign, refers to the international level, and it is an initiative implemented by the UN Volunteers as well as many other institutions and environmental organizations in many countries of the world. The aim of the initiative is to collect as many signatures of citizens in order to put pressure on world leaders, which the UN summit in Copenhagen in the period from 07th to 17 December, to try to bring the agreement to reduce emissions of gases CO2/greenhouse. According to scientists, CO2/greenhouse gases emissions, which now stands at 385 ppm (parts per million), are the basic cause of the warming of the planet and climate change. To stop climate change, it is necessary to reduce emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases at 350 ppm, at least, to have climate on the planet in the next 30 years stabilized.
Climate change brings serious consequences for the inhabitants of the earth, flood, fire, ice melting at the poles, increasing sea level, as well as a shortage of drinking water.

After collecting more signatures online in the next ten days, the petition for removal to landfill Krupac will submit the relevant ministries and bodies.
Petition for world leaders who will gather at the summit in Copenhagen will be delivered through the UN Volunteers, office in Bosnia.
